Neurology leader honoured

12 June 2019

Changing the lives of patients with chronic and severe headaches, along with fostering the growth of the neurological profession across the world, forms just part of the reason behind Associate Professor Richard Stark’s appointment to the Member of The Order of Australia (AM).

A/Prof Stark was recognized for his significant career service to neurological medicine, and to professional associations.

As Deputy Director of Neurology for Alfred Health, A/Prof Stark has helped to change the way patients with headaches are treated.

“In the past, doctors often regarded patients with headaches as not being able to be helped, and they had to go off and suffer, but during my career we’ve developed new and better treatments, and I’ve been involved in some of those as they came online.”

A/Prof Stark said he’s focused on inspiring young neurologists and trainees, including encouraging them to see headache as a worthwhile enterprise.

He has held major leadership positions in the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists, supporting the training of the next generation. He continues to hold major leadership in the World Federation of Neurologists, where he’s helping to improve neurology across the world, including many countries in Africa. This includes sharing of knowledge and supporting young neurologists’ training. A/Prof Stark is also President Elect of the Australian & New Zealand Headache Association.
