Alfred Health’s stance on building a respectful culture and improving patient safety in surgery has been further strengthened under a new agreement with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) commits both agencies to work closely to more effectively address issues around discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment in surgery, and the healthcare sector overall.

Alfred Health Chief Executive Andrew Way said the signing is another significant step to address safety in the workplace.

“We’re pleased to partner with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons on this important issue,” Prof Way said.

“We know that staff welfare and quality patient care go hand-in-hand. Providing a safe and supportive workplace not only benefits our staff, but also improves patient outcomes.

Under the agreement, both organisations will work together to:

  •  support greater diversity in the surgical profession
  • actively promote a respectful working environment that does not tolerate bullying, discrimination and harassment
  • increase education and training for surgeons and trainees.

Alfred Health is also supporting RACS’ Let’s Operate with Respect campaign, recently launching the initiative across all its campuses and theatre locations.
