R U OK? for every day
As part of RUOK? Day this week, Alfred Health staff from across all sites tuned into a conversation about the importance of compassion for others and for self.
Special guest Mary Freer, the author of Compassion Revolution, led the discussion with her research-based approach to compassion in healthcare settings and its ability to create more productive, friendlier and fulfilling workplaces.
“In tumultuous times, we need to nourish ourselves and others,” Mary said.
“We need to re-orient ourselves, our teams, and our organisations in this odd new landscape – that is about establishing grounding and horizon.”
Mary was joined by representatives from Alfred Health’s mental health team, community services and emergency department on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the team from The Alfred’s respiratory unit marked the day with an afternoon tea, using the opportunity to discuss what meaningful initiatives could be put in place to support the group year-round.
“The last few years have taught us that we need to be asking ‘R U OK?’ every day,” said Ashley McHardy, Respiratory Unit Nurse Manager.
"Today is a great reminder of the fact we need to continue supporting and checking in with each other, regardless of the day.”
