Road to Recovery is clear for burns team

Each year, almost 200 regional Victorians are transferred to the Victorian Adult Burns Service at The Alfred, for treatment for severe burns.   

Louise Higgins and Jacqueline Salway from VABS, who created the Road to Recovery, said the resource would help regional clinicians provide expert follow-up care to patients with extensive burns injuries.

“The Victorian Adults Burns Service at The Alfred is where the state’s most severe burns patients are taken for treatment. Each year, we see hundreds of patients from all over Victoria, in the last nine years we’ve seen 112 people from this region,” Louise said.

“When they return home, these patients still require specialised ongoing monitoring and care and the VABS treating team will usually refer patients to clinicians in their own community.

“Severe burn injuries are uncommon, and not something regional clinicians would see often. So we created this resource to support regional clinicians like GPs, nurses and allied health workers who are managing people recovering from burn injuries in their local communities,” Jacqui said.

The online resource provides practical advice, guidance and visual demonstration of common burn injury care, including videos and fact sheets.

The Road to Recovery website was made possible thanks to the generosity of the local Parker family. In 2016, Trevor Parker sadly passed away after sustaining significant burns in an accident on his property at Chiltern. Since then, Trevor’s family have been instrumental in raising thousands of dollars for the Victorian Adult Burns Service at The Alfred.
