Minister Hunt launches TBI mission in ICU

As a leading centre for neurotrauma, The Alfred was selected as the launch site for the federal government’s new Traumatic Brain Injury Mission.

Federal Minister for Health, the Hon. Greg Hunt met with clinicians in our Intensive Care Unit to announce $50 million in funding for the nationally co-ordinated mission.

The mission will seek to better predict recovery outcomes after a traumatic brain injury, develop new technologies and identify the most effective care and treatments. No such national database currently exists.

The Alfred’s Head of Emergency Radiology and Trauma, Associate Professor Dinesh Varma was named as the mission's Deputy Chair.

“It’s an honour to be selected to undertake this important role, and I’m pleased to see this funding commitment come to fruition after long advocating for more funding into research for traumatic brain injury,” A/Prof Varma said.

“I look forward to collaborating with other researchers in the field from across the country to further improve patient outcomes.”
