Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Clinic
Health professional information
Clinical service overview
We offer a multidisciplinary approach that includes specialised cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiac surgeons, geneticists, nurses and pharmacists. Our expert heart team manages all aspects of HCM care including
- Lifestyle modification (driving and licensing advice, sport and exercise guidance)
- Advanced cardiac imaging (cardiac MRI and echocardiography)
- Genetic testing (bulk-billed with genetic counselling)
- Pharmacotherapy (including the novel cardiac-specific myosin inhibitor mavacamten
- Arrhythmia management and ablation procedures
- Sudden cardiac death risk stratification and prevention with implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICD) including subcutaneous ICDs (S-ICD)
- Septal reduction procedures (percutaneous alcohol septal ablation and surgical septal myectomy)
- Cardiac transplantation
- Clinical trials through research collaborations with Monash University and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute
Our comprehensive management strategies include the novel cardiac-specific myosin inhibitor mavacamten. Mavacamten titration requires intensive monitoring of left ventricular ejection fraction with echocardiography which we provide in-house using a targeted mavacamten protocol and dedicated scanning lists. During the titration phase we provide frequent clinical monitoring with our cardiologists as well as telephone reviews with our heart failure nurse practitioners and cardiac pharmacists.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a complex diagnosis which may be mimicked by a number of rare conditions. A secondary purpose of our clinic is to investigate complex patients with undifferentiated left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and to on-refer them to our in-house expert colleagues who manage other conditions such as cardiac amyloidosis, cardiac sarcoidosis, hypertensive heart disease, athlete’s heart and Fabry’s disease.
Our goal at Alfred Cardiology is to facilitate the best standard of care for patients with HCM. We aim to collaborate with referring practitioners in a shared-care model and encourage referrals and consultations.

MBS-billed service
On the doctor’s behalf, Alfred Health can bulk bill the cost of the consultation for some services through Medicare. This means there is no out of pocket expense to the patient.
MBS-billed services require a current referral. Provide your patient with a 12 month referral to see the specialist of your choice at the requested clinic.
Referrals must be addressed to a named specialist or the Head of service, listed at the top of this page. Clinic consultants are listed on every clinic page.
Note that from time to time, your patient may be seen by another specialist in the clinic, in order to expedite their treatment.
