Care and support

We understand that recovery is unique for everyone. Care plans are personalised to meet your goals, focussing on preferences and choice.

Your care team

At Ngamai Wilam, you are placed at the centre of your recovery journey. You will be cared for by our multidisciplinary team that includes lived experience peer workers, allied health, nursing, medical and other health and supportive care practitioners. Other important members of our team include our chef, kitchen and housekeeping staff.

Better together

Our model of care at Ngamai Wilam is co-designed, meaning it is developed collaboratively with input from our expert care team, and individuals with lived experience of eating disorders.

Lived-experience workers, peer workers, and clinicians work together as a team, enabling us to better understand your needs and deliver trauma-informed care.

We’re listening

We aim to amplify your voice. We empower participants to actively participate in their treatment decisions. We encourage informed decision-making and engagement with your chosen support network (often family or friends), so you feel fully supported during your stay with us.

Our principles

Ngamai Wilam principles are at the heart of everything we do. These principles were developed through a co-design process that included people with a lived experience of an eating disorder.

1. Person-centred care

At Ngamai Wilam, people are treated with dignity, compassion and respect. Care is personalised; treatment tailored to meet participant needs; is strength-based and recovery orientated.

2. Integrated care in partnership

Care is in partnership with the participant, their family and chosen supports, their multidisciplinary team, other care providers across the continuum of their care and their broader community and social support network. It is recovery orientated and aims to set the participant up for success at home.

Ngamai Wilam works in partnership with other eating disorder care providers across the state of Victoria to deliver integrated care.

3. Evidence-based and evidence-generating practice

Safe and effective care is provided through the delivery of a comprehensive program of evidence-based treatment options that addresses all aspects of the eating disorder and any other medical or mental health conditions. It is responsive to the changing needs of the participant.

Evidence-based and evidence-generating care is supported through quality research and quality assurance activities and applied to all aspects of care.

4. Equitable care

Equitable access to care is provided to all Victorians with a diagnosed eating disorder. The centre is inclusive of all diverse members of the community.

A safe home-like environment is created for everyone; the participant; their family and chosen supports and staff who work in the centre.

5. Multidisciplinary, informed care

The multidisciplinary team includes lived experience and clinical expertise to provide holistic person-centred care.

6. Inclusion of participant's chosen supports

Participant's chosen supports are involved in care; they are provided with the skills and resources to support ongoing recovery for the participant, and own wellbeing.
