Prof Huyen Tran

Professor Huyen Tran is Director of the Ronald Sawers Haemophilia Treatment Centre (HTC) and the Clinical Thrombosis Service, both of which care for patients with blood disorders. Both services undertake research in their specialisation, and are associated with the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases (ACBD) and Alfred Health. Prof Tran completed his medical degree with honours at Monash University in 1994. He acquired his dual fellowships in Clinical and Laboratory Haematology in 2002, and completed a 2-year clinical fellowship in Thromboembolism at McMaster University, Canada in 2005 and his Master of Clinical Epidemiology in 2008. He is Chair of the Clinical Trials group of The Thrombosis and Haemostasis Society of Australia and New Zealand (THANZ), a past president, and Chair of the Australian Haemophilia Centres Directors’ Organisation (AHCDO).

Prof Tran’s focus is on clinical research in haematology with particular interests in thrombotic, bleeding disorders, and obstetrics haematology. He has been a recipient of several young investigator research awards and holds NHMRC grants. He has been a principal investigator in over 60 trials in these areas, has over 100 peer reviewed publications with >3500 citations. He supervises PhD candidates and advanced haematology trainees and has lectured widely in the Asia-Pacific region. He works with local, national and international advisory boards, and disease-specific advocacy groups to advocate for novel therapies to improve patient outcomes. He contributes to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) to improve care in low- and middle-income countries. He is a recipient of the Vietnam medal - “For People’s Health” award for valuable contributions to haemophilia care and the development of Vietnam’s health sector.
